The Unexpected Play of Love

OPENING PRAYER:

Gracious God, as we explore the new commandment of love that Jesus gave, open our hearts to understand and live out this radical love in our lives. Guide us with Your Spirit to love as You have loved us. Amen.

READ: John 13:34-35 (NIV)

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

John 13:34-35 (NIV)

REFLECT:

In this passage, Jesus introduces a new commandment to His disciples, one that redefines the concept of love. While the command to love was not new, the standard of love Jesus set was revolutionary. He called His disciples to love one another as He loved them, a love that would soon be demonstrated through His sacrificial death on the cross. This love is not based on feelings or convenience but is a deliberate choice to put others before ourselves, even at great personal cost.

Pastor Elliott’s message emphasizes that this new play of love is what turned the world upside down. It is a love that is unconditional and selfless, a love that seeks the best for others regardless of the circumstances. In our lives, we are called to embody this love in our relationships, whether with family, friends, or even strangers. This love is a powerful testimony of our faith and a reflection of Jesus' love for us.

As we reflect on this commandment, we are challenged to examine our own capacity to love. Are we willing to love others as Jesus loved us, even when it is difficult or inconvenient? This love requires us to step out of our comfort zones and extend grace and compassion to those around us. It is a love that is patient, kind, and forgiving, a love that seeks to build others up rather than tear them down.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will follow the Greatest Of All Time this week, and it's Jesus.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the new commandment of love that Jesus gave us. Help us to love others as You have loved us, with a love that is selfless and sacrificial. May our love be a testimony of Your grace and draw others to You. Amen.
