Asking the Right Questions

OPENING PRAYER:

Dear Lord, as we explore Your Word today, teach us the art of asking the right questions. Help us to seek understanding and wisdom in our interactions with others. Amen.

READ: John 4:7-10 (NLT)

"Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, 'You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?' Jesus replied, 'If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.'"

REFLECT:

In this passage, Jesus engages with a Samaritan woman, breaking several social norms of His time. Jews typically avoided Samaritans, and men rarely spoke to women in public. Yet, Jesus initiates a conversation by asking a simple question, "Will you give me a drink?" This question opens the door to a deeper dialogue about spiritual matters.

Jesus' approach teaches us the importance of asking questions that invite conversation and understanding. He doesn't start with a lecture or a message but with a question that shows His interest in the woman's life. This method of engagement is powerful; it shows respect and a willingness to listen.

In our divided world, asking the right questions can bridge gaps and foster understanding. Instead of jumping to conclusions or making assumptions, we can follow Jesus' example by asking questions that show genuine interest in others' perspectives and experiences. Reflect on your recent interactions. Have you been quick to speak or slow to listen? How can you improve your communication by asking thoughtful questions?

APPLY:

Consider making a conscious effort to ask meaningful questions in your interactions. Whether it's with a family member, a colleague, or a friend, show genuine interest in their thoughts and experiences. Listen actively and seek to understand their perspective.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will be humble like Jesus in a divided world.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, thank You for the example of Jesus in engaging others with compassion and curiosity. Help me to ask the right questions and to listen with an open heart. May my interactions reflect Your love and grace. Amen.
