The Importance of Community

OPENING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, as we begin this journey, open our hearts and minds to the importance of community in our walk with You. Guide us through Your Word and help us to understand the value of fellowship. Amen.

READ: Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. - Acts 2:42-47

REFLECT:

In the early church, believers were deeply committed to each other and to the teachings of the apostles. This passage from Acts highlights the essence of Christian community—devotion to teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. The early Christians were not just casual acquaintances; they were a close group, sharing their lives and resources. This sense of community was so powerful that it drew others to them, and the Lord added to their number daily.

The message emphasized that being part of a smaller group within the church is crucial for spiritual growth. Just as the early Christians thrived in their communal life, we too can experience spiritual growth when we engage deeply with a community of believers. This is not just about attending church services but about forming authentic, transparent relationships where we can share our struggles and joys.

Reflect on your own life. Are you part of a community where you can be authentic and receive support? If not, what steps can you take to find or build such a community? Remember, God designed us to live in community, not in isolation.

APPLY:

Today, take a step towards building or strengthening your community. Reach out to someone in your church or small group. Share a prayer request or offer to pray for them. If you’re not part of a Group, consider joining one or starting one.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I WILL take steps to connect to a small group of believers this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for the gift of community. Help me to take steps towards building authentic relationships with other believers. Guide me to a group where I can grow, share, and serve. Amen.
