Understanding the Signs
OPENING PRAYER:
Gracious God, as we delve into Your Word today, grant us wisdom and discernment to understand the signs of the times. May we be attentive to Your voice and ready to act according to Your will. Amen.
“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.”
Jesus uses the parable of the fig tree to teach His disciples about recognizing the signs of His return. Just as the budding of the fig tree indicates the coming of summer, certain events will signal His return.
Matthew 24:32-35
REFLECT:
In Pastor Carter’s message this weekend he highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of the times, as Jesus taught in Matthew 24. The fig tree serves as a metaphor for understanding the unfolding of prophetic events. Jesus encourages His followers to be observant and discerning, recognizing that certain occurrences will precede His return. This awareness is not meant to incite fear but to inspire readiness and hope.
In the context of our lives, recognizing the signs involves being aware of the spiritual and moral climate around us. It means understanding the challenges and opportunities we face as believers in a world that often opposes God's truth. For new believers, this might involve learning about biblical prophecy and how it relates to current events. For mature Christians, it could mean deepening their understanding of eschatology and sharing that knowledge with others.
Todd’s message reminds us that while we may not know the exact timing of Jesus' return, we can live with confidence and expectation. This confidence comes from knowing that God is in control and that His promises are sure. As we observe the signs, we are called to respond with faith and action, living in a way that reflects our hope in Christ.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will take a step of obedience to become ready for the return of Jesus.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for the assurance that You are in control of all things. Help us to recognize the signs of Your work and respond with faith and readiness. May we live each day with the hope and expectation of Your return. Amen.
