Shine: Week 2 - Day 3
OPENING PRAYER:
Help me to slow down and hear from you today God. Speak into my heart and show me your will.
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
REFLECT:
The kind of love that Jesus is talking about here is not just a feeling. It’s so easy to give up on loving those around us when we don’t feel like it. There have been many times when I don’t feel loving towards my spouse or my family because they have made me mad or acted in a way that was unlikeable. This is the type of love we see in the world. The type of love that is easy-come and easy-go.
Jesus is calling us to sacrificial love. Love that is an action and not just a feeling. This type of love requires choosing to act in a way that is loving even when others don’t deserve it, or they let you down. This is the type of love that Jesus had for those around him and the type of love that God has for his children. This is the type of love that sticks around through all the mountains and valleys. Jesus is calling us to lay down our lives for those that we love. He calls us to put aside what we want and how we feel to serve others. We can shine by giving sacrificial love to those around us.
APPLY:
Think about just a few of the people that you love. Do you serve them only when you feel like it or when it is easy? Think through some specific ways you can show sacrificial love to your family, friends and neighbors.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Show me ways to love those around me. Open my eyes to ways that I can serve my friends and family as you have called me to love.
