The Power of Relational Discipleship
OPENING PRAYER:
Gracious God, as we open Your Word today, help us see how vital relationships are in following Jesus together. Lead us by Your Spirit to build meaningful connections that show Your love in real ways. Amen.
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
REFLECT:
This passage, known as the Shema, is a central declaration of faith in Judaism and emphasizes the importance of loving God wholeheartedly. It also highlights the role of parents and guardians in teaching their children about God. Pastor Rodney Elliott pointed out that faith is more caught than taught, meaning that children learn more from observing the lived faith of adults than from formal instruction alone.
In ancient Israel, the home was the primary place of learning, and parents were the first teachers. This is a powerful reminder that discipleship is not confined to church buildings but is a way of life. Rodney’s message encourages us to integrate faith into everyday activities, making it a natural part of our conversations and interactions.
Consider how you can incorporate faith into your daily routine. It might be through prayer at mealtimes, discussing a Bible story during a walk, or reflecting on God's goodness before bed. These small acts of faithfulness can create a strong foundation for the next generation.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will get off the couch and get in the game. Maybe there is a point in your daily routine, such as a meal or a car ride, where you can incorporate a faith-based conversation with a child or young person. Use this time to ask them about their day, share a Bible story, or pray together. Make it a regular part of your interactions to build a foundation of faith.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for the relationships that shape our faith. Help us to be intentional in our interactions, using every opportunity to share Your love and truth. May our homes be places where faith is lived and experienced daily. Amen.
