When Your Heart Lies to You

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, search me and know my heart. Reveal the places where I've trusted my own understanding more than Your truth, and give me the humility to surrender my certainty to Your wisdom.

READ: Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

This is one of the most memorized passages in Proverbs, often reduced to a comforting platitude. But in its original context, it's a radical call to reorient our entire decision-making process. The word "heart" here doesn't mean emotions, it refers to the innermost being, the core of who we are: mind, will, and soul. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

REFLECT:

Pastor Rodney Elliott made a crucial distinction that we often miss: when Scripture says "trust in the Lord with all your heart," it's not talking about warm, fuzzy feelings. As Americans, we hear "heart" and think of emotions, but the Hebrew points to something far more comprehensive, everything we are, our whole selves. This isn't about feeling a certain way about God; it's about orienting our entire lives around His wisdom instead of our own.

Then comes the harder part: "lean not on your own understanding." Rodney confessed, "I've done that many times, leaned on my own understanding. And my understanding needed something different." What a humble admission. Our understanding, the way we see the world, the conclusions we draw, the decisions that make sense to us, is fundamentally limited and often wrong. Rodney even noted that his feelings are wrong about 50% of the time, and it's a very good thing he doesn't act on half of them. We live in a culture that tells us to "follow your heart" and "trust your gut," but Scripture says the opposite: your heart will lie to you, your understanding will mislead you, and you need something greater than yourself to navigate life well.

APPLY:

Think about a decision you're facing right now. Before you move forward based on what "feels right" or "makes sense" to you, pause and ask: "What does God's Word say about this? What would someone who loves Jesus and knows me well say?" Open your Bible and read a passage related to your situation, or reach out to a trusted believer for perspective. Practice leaning on understanding that isn't your own.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will eat my green beans this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, I confess that I often trust my own understanding more than I trust You. Forgive me for the arrogance of thinking I know better than the One who created me. Teach me to submit every decision, every path, every choice to Your wisdom.
