The Salad or the Steak?

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, open my eyes to see the hidden costs of the life I'm reaching for. Give me wisdom to know the difference between what I want and what will truly satisfy, between what looks good and what is good.

READ: Proverbs 15:16-17 (NLT)

"Better to have little with fear for the Lord than to have great treasure in inner turmoil. A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak with someone that you hate."

Solomon uses food imagery that transcends culture and time—everyone understands that steak is more desirable than vegetables. Yet he flips our assumptions, showing that the quality of our relationships and our peace with God matter infinitely more than the quality of our meals.

REFLECT:

Pastor Christian Hallberg made us laugh with this one - 99 times out of 100, he's taking the steak over the salad. Most of us would too. But here's the uncomfortable truth Solomon is pressing on: just because we can afford something doesn't mean we can afford the lifestyle. There's always an unforeseen cost when we simply reach for what we want without counting what it might cost us in relationships, peace, or spiritual health.

The message painted a picture of a wealthy man eating steak but hating his dinner companion, somewhere along the way, the pursuit of more cost him the relationships that matter. Our culture screams at us to get what we want, when we want it, and not to worry about paying for it later. Credit cards and loans make it easy to reach for the steak even when we should be content with the salad. But the guardrail God sets isn't meant to deprive us, it's meant to protect us from the crash that comes when we slide off the road chasing comfort and indulgence. Living below our means feels restrictive until we realize the alternative is careening down a mountain with no guardrail at all.

APPLY:

Identify one area where you're reaching for "the steak" when you really only need "the salad." Maybe it's your car, your phone plan, your streaming subscriptions, or your dining out habits. This isn't about legalism - it's about honesty. Ask yourself: Is this thing I'm reaching for costing me something more valuable than money? Is it costing me peace, time with people I love, or margin to be generous? Choose one thing to scale back this week.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will put in the big rocks first.

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, help me see clearly what I'm trading for the things I want. Give me the courage to choose relationships and peace over comfort and indulgence. Teach me that living below my means isn't restriction—it's freedom.
