Voices That Echo Long After
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, quiet the noise in my soul so I can hear Your voice clearly. Remind me that the voices I allow to speak into my life, and the voice I become for others, carry weight that echoes far beyond the moment.
"Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives and follow the example of their faith." Hebrews 13:7 (NLT)
This verse comes near the end of Hebrews, a letter written to Jewish Christians facing persecution and pressure to abandon their faith. The author urges them to remember those who had invested in them, not just their words, but the trajectory of their entire lives. The phrase "the outcome of their way of life" suggests looking at the fruit, the long-term results of how they lived.
REFLECT:
Pastor Jarred told a story about telling his daughter something twenty times without it landing, only to have her come home amazed by the same truth when someone else said it once. Every parent knows that sting and that relief. It's the reminder that we can't do this alone, that our kids will tune us out precisely when they need trusted voices beyond ours. Jarred wasn't advocating for parents to step back; he was acknowledging a beautiful truth: God often uses a community of voices to shape a single heart.
This is why the verse from Hebrews matters so much. It's not just about remembering facts our leaders taught us; it's about remembering the good that came from their lives and following their example of faith. Jarred emphasized that we need people in our kids' lives who aren't just teaching things worth listening to, but living lives worth following. That's the difference between information and formation. When a small group leader shows up at your child's soccer game, when a mentor texts to ask how that hard conversation went, when an older believer prays by name for the specific struggles your teenager faces, those moments build trust that makes teaching land differently. We need voices around our kids who live what they're inviting others into, who set examples worth emulating. That's not about perfection; it's about authenticity and perseverance in following Jesus.
APPLY:
Make a short list of two or three people whose faith you respect and who could be a trusted voice in the life of a young person you care about. Pray over those names this week, asking God if and how to connect them. Maybe it's inviting a small group leader to coffee with your teenager, or asking a godly friend to mentor your child in an area where they have wisdom. Don't overthink it, just take the first step of praying and asking.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will take one step to help the kid in my life discover community.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for the voices You've placed in my life that pointed me back to You when I was drifting. Give me wisdom to recognize and invite those kinds of voices into the lives of the young people I love. Help me also to be that kind of voice for someone else.
PRAYER REQUEST:
Share your prayer request and pray for others.
