Gentleness in Truth
OPENING PRAYER:
Dear Lord, please help me speak the truth to others about your goodness and grace. Help me to share the truth of you in a way that lets others see what I already know.
“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV)
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16 (NIV)
REFLECT:
I have several close family members who had negative experiences with “Christians” early in their lives. Sadly, their education about Christianity was that it was about human judgment of others and hypocrisy. Despite countless positive interactions with “Christians” since that time, the truth has been harder to embrace than the earlier lies and misrepresentations of the faith. We talk so often in the church about inviting others and sharing our faith, which is extremely important. How we go about it, and how we live as Christ-followers, will determine how successful we can be at building God’s kingdom here on earth.
The best thing we can do is follow the example of Jesus when interacting with non-believers, whether we choose to overtly share our faith or not. Jesus treated everyone with respect, and he spoke truth with kindness and genuine love. Let the world see him in you. One of the best ways to impact a non-believer is for them to see that you are different and for them to ask why. Use that opening to share the good news and the impact of Jesus in your life.
APPLY:
Research has shown that it can take up to eight positive interactions to overcome a bad initial impression. As Christ-followers, it is vital to approach and interact with people in love and kindness. Whenever you find yourself in a situation where you can make an impression, be sure to take a moment and pray to God for kindness, patience and love. How we relate to others matters.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice that gives us the opportunity for eternal life with you. Thank you for being our example to help people who don’t currently know you learn about who you are.
